Why I Fell For The Get Down

After two minutes of watching The Get Down, I knew that the show is cool as shit! The story, the music, the colors, everything is strategically laid there for us to absorb. I love how each character has a voice, everyone has an identity. Baz Luhrmann, the man behind the show is known for his aesthetic and visuals that slowly but surely shaped the face of contemporary cinema, Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge, and The Great Gatsby... Here he resuscitates the 70s, along with his wife Catherine Martin and costume designer Jeriana san Juan. Being friends with Diane Von Furstenberg, the power couple, had access to her studio 54 wardrobe and photographs. Fact: The first time we see Yolanda Kipling, she's wearing an original Von Furstenberg dress from Diane's personal archives, and Mylenes's gold disco dress is a Halston original! This whole summer has been a 70s haze, after binge watching That 70s Show, and falling head over heels for everything from that era... Watching The Get Down was the cherry on top of the perfectly formulated ice-cream summer.
