W.E.

Who's W.E.? Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII, a love story, perhaps, like no other... A king abdicates his throne, loses his family, becomes exiled from his country; all for the love of a woman...

Andrea Riseborough captured Wallis' essence... Her accent, her style, her everything... She is dazzling as the American divorcee who caught the eye and  ultimately the affection of Edward played by James D'Arcy...

If the movie focused only on their story, it would've been more interesting; but leave it to the co-writer and director of the movie, the material girl herself, Madonna; to sew in a modern storyline... Wally (Abbie Cornish) is trapped in a loveless marriage. She too gave up everything for her husband; but in return she receives both verbal and physical abuse (just like Wallis in her first marriage). Wally is trying to conceive, but it seems like both Wallis and Wally have another thing in common...

Wally is obsessed with Wallis Simpson throughout the movie...One of the best scenes was when Wallis slapped Wally and told her "This isn't some kind of fairytale, wake up!"...
This movie is truly a treat for the eyes... The Costumes... The Cartier Jewels (especially the  cross charm)...Everything is exquisite and spot on!
The movie is very fashion oriented, the attention to detail is astonishing...

A costume design sketch for Wallis' day dress

Wally's Wardrobe is all black and gloomy, whereas Wallis' is vibrant, sexy, and seductive...I loved the party scene Where Edward Asks her to dance for him...She looked divine in a heavy beaded dress; nevertheless, she danced as light as a feather to the beats of the Sex Pistols' "Pretty Vacant"...
The music in this movie has a life of its own... Abel Korzeniowski's music is Amazing! It literally makes you want to cry. 'Charms' is my absolute favorite.  Madonna's 'Masterpiece' ain't bad either...
Moral of the film, in my opinion, is that their love was Not a fairytale! They didn't live happily ever after... Edward lost everything for Wallis, so he invests his whole life in her to an extinct of suffocating her...However, Wallis even if she wanted to get out of this marriage or just take a couple of days of solace, She couldn't! Simply because she has to be with him always and always and always...
